name reality-restaged description Reinterpret documentary, travel, street, cultural, and human-centered photographs through the distinctive Reality Restaged visual language: radically simplified theatrical environments, large saturated color fields, strong negative space, cinematic recomposition, one impossible relationship, monumental scale, and believable analog photographic realism. Preserve the documentary identity of people, animals, gestures, clothing, cultural details, and emotional relationships while rebuilding the world around them. REALITY RESTAGED Documentary memory. Surreal stage. CORE DIRECTIVE Reality Restaged does not decorate reality with surreal objects. It rebuilds documentary reality as a deliberately art-directed cinematic stage. The transformation must be visible at the level of COMPOSITION, SPACE, SCALE, and COLOR — not merely through the addition of a strange object. The original photograph is documentary memory. The final image is a new stage built from that memory. COLOR IS ARCHITECTURE. Large saturated color fields should actively construct the image: walls, floors, voids, horizons, planes, curves, thresholds, and spatial divisions. Do not merely recolor the existing sky, ground, or background. COMPOSITION ENGINE — MANDATORY Before generating, silently perform the following sequence. 1. IDENTIFY THE DOCUMENTARY ANCHORS Identify what must survive from the source photograph: the primary person, animal, or human gesture distinctive clothing, posture, expression, or silhouette important cultural details meaningful relationships between subjects one or two environmental forms essential to the memory or place Preserve these anchors with photographic credibility. Do not preserve everything. 2. REDUCE REALITY Aggressively simplify the environment. Remove or suppress secondary information such as: busy vegetation unnecessary buildings roads crowds random furniture visual clutter incidental objects excessive landscape detail decorative texture unless they are essential to the documentary meaning. The final world should contain fewer elements than the source photograph. Negative space is an active compositional element. 3. EXTRACT COLOR Find 2–4 strong colors latent in the source photograph. Expand those colors into large visual fields. A small red garment may become a monumental red architectural plane. A blue sky may become a vast blue spatial field. Dark volcanic terrain may become a monumental black form. Do not treat color as decoration. COLOR MUST ORGANIZE SPACE. ABSTRACT THE SOURCE, NOT JUST ENLARGE IT Extract the VISUAL LOGIC of a documentary element, not necessarily its literal form. When an element from the source inspires the reconstructed world, preserve one or more of its: color direction rhythm geometry texture scale relationship spatial function but do NOT automatically reproduce or enlarge the object itself. For example: A red scarf does not need to become a gigantic red scarf. Its red color, flowing direction, softness, or wrapping gesture may instead become: a red architectural plane a curved stage wall a geometric landscape a spatial division a red horizon an abstract structural form The transformation should feel derived from the source without being a literal visual metaphor. Prefer abstraction over object enlargement. The viewer may sense where the visual idea came from without immediately recognizing the source object. Prefer bold relationships such as: red / blue orange / black blue / ochre red / black / cream saturated field / dark monumental form when supported by the source photograph. 4. RESTAGE THE COMPOSITION The original camera composition is NOT sacred. Recompose the photograph. The subject may move within the frame. The horizon may move. Foreground and background may change visual weight. Landscape may become architecture. Architecture may become abstract geometry. A small environmental detail may become monumental. A large realistic environment may be reduced to one simple shape. Create a deliberate relationship between: SUBJECT + COLOR FIELD + MONUMENTAL FORM + NEGATIVE SPACE. The result should feel staged, designed, and art-directed — not like a photograph with its background replaced. 5. REBUILD SCALE AND RELATIONSHIPS At least one spatial relationship should be reconsidered. Possible strategies include: monumental landscape versus small human figure oversized animal versus human tiny human versus architectural void repeated figures compressed horizon impossible continuation of floor and wall landscape behaving like architecture objects becoming thresholds extreme foreground/background scale contrast Scale should create visual tension without making the image grotesque. 6. ESTABLISH ONE IMPOSSIBLE SPATIAL OR RELATIONAL LOGIC Only after the composition already works visually, establish ONE primary surreal logic. This surreal logic may already be created entirely through composition, scale, color architecture, spatial contradiction, repetition, or the relationship between subject and environment. Do NOT add another surreal object when the reconstructed space is already sufficiently impossible. Prefer: impossible spatial continuity architectural transformation of landscape monumental scale folded or intersecting planes meaningful repetition thresholds or openings impossible but visually clean relationships between documentary elements The surreal gesture should feel inevitable rather than random. FORBIDDEN SHORTCUTS Do NOT rely primarily on: turning a mountain or object upside down placing a random giant object in the sky arbitrary floating objects melting objects generic dream imagery decorative portals with no narrative purpose random moons or celestial objects surreal clutter simply replacing the background simply changing the sky to a saturated color preserving the original composition and adding one strange object These are generic surrealist shortcuts. Reality Restaged must transform the STRUCTURE OF THE IMAGE. VISUAL HIERARCHY A successful Reality Restaged image should usually read in approximately this order: LARGE COLOR FIELD MONUMENTAL LANDSCAPE OR GEOMETRIC FORM DOCUMENTARY SUBJECT ONE SMALL CULTURAL, SYMBOLIC, OR ENVIRONMENTAL DETAIL The eye should understand the composition before discovering the surreal logic. If the first impression is: "a normal photograph with something strange added" the transformation has failed. If the first impression is: "a designed cinematic stage containing a real documentary memory" the transformation has succeeded. REALITY RESTAGED TEST Before final generation, silently ask: Did I substantially recompose the source image? Did I simplify the environment? Are large color fields constructing the space? Is there strong negative space? Did I create a new relationship between subject and environment? Is there one clear surreal proposition rather than many effects? Does the human or documentary subject still feel photographically real? Could this composition exist without the surreal object? If the answer to question 8 is no, redesign the composition first. The composition must be strong before surrealism is added. Reality Restaged is not a generic surrealism style. It is a visual system for transforming real documentary photographs into cinematic surreal tableaux that feel as though they belong to the same artistic universe. The objective is not: “make this photograph surreal.” The objective is: “preserve the reality inside the photograph, then rebuild the world around it according to the Reality Restaged visual language.” A successful image should feel like: a real photograph of a world that could never exist. ──────────────────── 1. THE REALITY RESTAGED VISUAL DNA Every new work should be built from the following visual equation: DOCUMENTARY SUBJECT RADICALLY SIMPLIFIED STAGE LARGE CONTROLLED COLOR FIELDS ONE IMPOSSIBLE RELATIONSHIP STRONG SCALE OR SPATIAL TENSION NEGATIVE SPACE ANALOG PHOTOGRAPHIC REALISM The subject may change. The country may change. The culture may change. The surreal mechanism may change. The composition may change. But the visual grammar should remain recognizable. The goal is: SAME UNIVERSE. DIFFERENT WORLDS. ──────────────────── 2. REALITY FIRST Before transforming anything, understand what must survive from the source photograph. Identify: HERO What is the visual anchor? It may be: a person a group of people an animal a vehicle an object a gesture distinctive clothing a cultural symbol RELATIONSHIP What is happening between the important elements? Examples: human and animal observer and performer fisherman and waiting animals rider and landscape person and shadow group and ritual vehicle and traveler subject and architecture DOCUMENTARY DETAIL What details make this photograph specific rather than generic? Examples: clothing hats cloaks jewelry tools flowers staffs vehicles ritual gestures cultural symbols local architecture characteristic colors ACCIDENT Look for useful photographic accidents: strange overlap unexpected shadow unusual spacing accidental symmetry an animal entering the frame partial obstruction unusual scale awkward gesture color coincidence These accidents may contain the surreal idea already hidden inside the photograph. Do not erase them automatically. ──────────────────── 3. DISTILL BEFORE DESIGNING Reduce the documentary photograph to one visual sentence. Use: SUBJECT + RELATIONSHIP + CONTRADICTION Examples: A fisherman and two animals wait around a single fish. Several jumping figures attempt to reach an observer positioned impossibly high above them. A traveler pulls an object while an impossible shadow dominates the landscape. A rider and animal cross a landscape whose geometry no longer obeys reality. If the concept requires a paragraph to explain: SIMPLIFY IT. ──────────────────── 4. RECOMPOSITION IS THE DEFAULT For every NEW Reality Restaged image: DO NOT simply preserve the original composition and add surreal objects. DO NOT merely replace the sky. DO NOT merely recolor the photograph. DO NOT apply a surreal filter. RECOMPOSE THE WORLD. Unless the user explicitly asks to preserve an existing composition, redesign at least one major spatial relationship. Possible transformations include: reposition the hero within the frame enlarge foreground subjects reduce distant figures alter the horizon create extreme foreground/background tension isolate subjects from environmental clutter change the distance between figures transform the relationship between human and landscape transform the relationship between animal and human transform the relationship between body and shadow turn architecture into a spatial device create monumental negative space The final composition must feel deliberately staged. It should NOT feel like: “the same photograph with surreal elements added.” ──────────────────── 5. RADICALLY SIMPLIFY THE ENVIRONMENT Reality Restaged usually removes more than it adds. Documentary backgrounds are source material, not sacred layouts. Preserve environmental information only when it contributes to: identity geography culture story relationship surreal mechanism Otherwise simplify it aggressively. Replace unnecessary environmental complexity with: large matte walls flat ground planes clean horizons monumental color fields simple architectural surfaces minimal sea surfaces controlled geometric spatial divisions isolated landscape fragments large areas of negative space Do not reproduce every building, tree, car, sign, cloud, chair, object, or passerby simply because it appears in the original photograph. Ask: WHAT CAN BE REMOVED? before asking: WHAT CAN BE ADDED? ──────────────────── 6. LARGE COLOR FIELDS ARE A SIGNATURE Large areas of controlled saturated color are a defining part of the Reality Restaged visual language. They are not optional decoration. For NEW compositions, actively seek opportunities to transform complex scenery into broad fields of color. Prefer approximately: 2 DOMINANT COLORS 1 SUPPORTING COLOR At least one dominant color should usually occupy a substantial portion of the frame. Useful color relationships include: cobalt blue × vermilion red deep cyan × terracotta ochre yellow × burgundy orange × black cream × deep blue teal × warm red dusty yellow × dark crimson muted sand × saturated blue Do NOT mechanically use the same palette for every work. The palette should respond to the documentary source while still producing a strong graphic contrast. Color should organize: foreground background subject architecture negative space Color must do structural work. Do not use color merely to make the image attractive. Avoid: rainbow palettes weak muddy backgrounds excessive gradients many equally dominant colors random colorful objects generic teal-and-orange cinematic grading When a composition feels visually weak: SIMPLIFY THE COLOR STRUCTURE BEFORE ADDING MORE OBJECTS. ──────────────────── 7. ONE IMPOSSIBLE SPATIAL OR RELATIONAL LOGIC The central surreal principle is: ONE IMPOSSIBLE SPATIAL OR RELATIONAL LOGIC. This does NOT require an obviously impossible object. The surrealism may already exist in the way the image is constructed: color behaving like architecture landscape behaving like a stage scale creating an impossible hierarchy foreground and background obeying different spatial rules architecture emerging from natural forms repeated environmental elements forming an unnatural rhythm a horizon behaving like a physical structure negative space becoming monumental a documentary subject existing naturally inside an impossible composition The viewer should not necessarily think: “that object is impossible.” The stronger response is often: “this entire world feels impossible, but strangely believable.” Do not force an additional surreal object if the recomposed space is already sufficiently strange. The surrealism should emerge from the STRUCTURE OF THE WORLD. Not from a decorative surreal prop. The strongest Reality Restaged images should contain one impossible relationship that changes the meaning of the original documentary moment. Possible mechanisms include: SCALE Change the scale relationship. Examples: an animal becomes larger than the human observing it a shadow becomes larger than its owner a person becomes tiny inside a monumental environment a foreground subject becomes monumental against distant figures SPACE Transform physical space. Examples: the ground becomes a wall the sea becomes a table a landscape folds two incompatible spaces meet the horizon behaves like architecture ARCHITECTURE Use architecture to restructure reality. Examples: a wall interrupts a landscape an opening becomes an impossible threshold a natural structure becomes architectural an architectural plane divides two realities SHADOW Change the relationship between body and shadow. Examples: the shadow separates from the body the shadow becomes more dominant than the person the shadow reveals a different scale or identity REPETITION Turn documentary movement into spatial rhythm. Examples: a gesture repeats through space one action appears at several stages a group becomes a visual sequence GRAVITY Alter expected physical orientation. REFLECTION Allow a reflection to become another spatial reality. ABSENCE Remove most of reality until only the documentary core remains. The surrealism must change a RELATIONSHIP. Do not simply place a strange object beside the subject. ──────────────────── 8. THE STAGE Reality Restaged should often feel as if reality has been reconstructed on an enormous theatrical stage. Think: TABLEAU THEATRE INSTALLATION PHOTOGRAPHY Useful spatial structures include: monumental walls clean floors isolated platforms simple horizons architectural cuts enormous flat surfaces water planes restrained openings large empty fields impossible spatial intersections The stage should be simple enough that the documentary subject remains emotionally dominant. Avoid over-designed environments. The surreal world should feel monumental but visually quiet. ──────────────────── 9. NEGATIVE SPACE Negative space is one of the primary compositional tools of Reality Restaged. Use it deliberately to create: silence scale isolation tension monumentality visual rhythm breathing room Do not fill empty areas merely because they feel empty. A large uninterrupted field of: blue red orange cream yellow black cyan terracotta may be more powerful than another surreal object. When uncertain: REMOVE. ──────────────────── 10. SCALE AS STORY Scale distortion must express meaning. Good uses include: animal larger than human shadow larger than body landscape overwhelming architecture clothing becoming architectural tiny human against monumental color oversized foreground subject facing a distant human repeated figures changing scale through depth Bad use: making something enormous only because “large objects look surreal.” Scale must strengthen the story and the relationship. ──────────────────── 11. MINIMUM TRANSFORMATION THRESHOLD Before accepting a NEW Reality Restaged composition, ask: IF THE SURREAL INTERVENTION DISAPPEARED, WOULD THIS STILL LOOK MOSTLY LIKE THE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH? If YES: THE TRANSFORMATION IS TOO WEAK. Do not accept it. Instead: recompose the scene simplify the environment strengthen the scale relationship strengthen the spatial contradiction enlarge the color fields increase negative space redesign the relationship between subject and world The result must clearly feel like a newly constructed visual world. Not a filtered photograph. Not a lightly edited photograph. Not a photograph with one surreal prop added. A REALITY RESTAGED IMAGE MUST BE VISIBLY RESTAGED. ──────────────────── 12. HUMAN FIGURES MUST REMAIN REAL The world may become impossible. The people must remain believable. Preserve: realistic human height natural leg length natural torso length believable shoulder width realistic head-to-body ratio natural posture believable center of gravity authentic clothing structure natural skin texture realistic hands and limbs Never vertically compress a person to make them fit the composition. If more room is needed: EXPAND THE WORLD. DO NOT SHORTEN THE PERSON. Avoid: oversized heads short legs compressed torsos miniature-looking adults mannequin-like bodies wax-like faces artificial poses Human proportions should feel naturally elongated when appropriate to the original subject. Do not sacrifice believable anatomy for graphic composition. ──────────────────── 13. INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE MUST REMAIN INDIVIDUAL When multiple real people appear, preserve their differences. Check: facial structure age height body type skin texture expression posture clothing accessories hairstyle gesture Avoid SAME-FACE SYNDROME. Do not transform a group of real individuals into copies of one synthetic person. When exact facial identity cannot be preserved reliably, prioritize believable individuality rather than generating visibly duplicated faces. ──────────────────── 14. CULTURAL INTEGRITY When the source photograph contains cultural, religious, ceremonial, traditional, or geographically specific details, preserve them carefully. Protect: traditional clothing hats cloaks embroidery jewelry beads staffs crosses flowers tools ritual gestures culturally meaningful symbols characteristic materials culturally meaningful colors Do not invent exotic details merely to make the scene appear more unusual. Do not turn cultural identity itself into the surreal spectacle. The principle is: MAKE THE WORLD SURREAL. NOT THE CULTURE. The documentary specificity of the original photograph should remain recognizable inside the reconstructed world. ──────────────────── 15. ANIMALS MUST REMAIN ANATOMICALLY BELIEVABLE Animals may change scale. Their anatomy should not become accidentally surreal. Always check: number of heads number of limbs tail ears eyes mouth wings paws body connections posture Avoid: duplicated heads missing tails extra limbs fused bodies accidental hybrids malformed wings unnecessary anthropomorphism If surrealism requires an animal to become monumental: CHANGE SCALE. NOT ANATOMY. ──────────────────── 16. PHOTOGRAPHIC REALISM Reality Restaged should look PHOTOGRAPHED. Not rendered. Not illustrated. Not painted. Not like generic AI concept art. Prefer: believable natural lighting realistic directional shadows natural skin texture realistic fabric subtle analog grain restrained sharpness soft highlight roll-off believable depth realistic photographic exposure slight optical imperfection controlled cinematic color subtle film character The image may contain impossible space. But the photographic surface should remain convincing. Allow minor photographic imperfection. Perfect digital surfaces often destroy photographic credibility. The desired feeling is: A DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN INSIDE AN IMPOSSIBLE WORLD. ──────────────────── 17. FILM TEXTURE Film character should be subtle and integrated. Prefer: fine analog grain slightly softened micro-contrast restrained saturation within strong color fields natural highlight behavior gentle tonal falloff slight optical softness realistic shadow density tactile fabric and skin Do not simulate film by simply covering the image with obvious noise. Do not over-process. The image should feel cinematic because of: LIGHT + COMPOSITION + COLOR + SPACE + TEXTURE not because of a heavy preset. ──────────────────── 18. AVOID THE GENERIC AI LOOK Avoid: excessive sharpness HDR appearance plastic skin wax-like faces artificial cinematic glow excessive rim lighting glossy 3D surfaces hyper-detail everywhere perfect synthetic symmetry fantasy concept-art rendering painterly surfaces generic cinematic haze malformed hands duplicated faces distorted animals unnecessary visual effects Do not make every surface spectacular. Do not make every object perfectly polished. Do not make every shadow dramatic. Restraint is part of the visual identity. When choosing between: MORE SPECTACLE and MORE RESTRAINT choose: MORE RESTRAINT. ──────────────────── 19. DO NOT TURN SYMBOLS INTO FORMULAS Reality Restaged may sometimes use: doors windows mirrors spheres stairs flowers shadows birds openings geometric forms But none of these are mandatory signatures. Never automatically add: A RED DOOR. A MOON. A SPHERE. A WINDOW. A MIRROR. A GIANT SHADOW. A GIANT ANIMAL. These are possible mechanisms. They are NOT the visual identity itself. The style must be recognizable through: recomposition monumental color negative space scale spatial tension documentary realism cinematic staging not through repeated props. ──────────────────── 20. REFERENCE IMAGES — LEARN THE GRAMMAR, NOT THE SCENE When Reality Restaged reference works or examples are available, treat them as STYLE EVIDENCE. Study them for recurring visual decisions such as: ratio of subject to negative space size of dominant color fields saturation relationships foreground/background scale horizon placement human scale animal scale theatrical staging environmental simplification photographic texture surreal intensity visual silence relationship between documentary subject and impossible world Extract the recurring visual grammar across MULTIPLE references. Do not overfit to one reference image. DO NOT copy: exact composition exact pose exact architecture exact surreal object exact palette exact placement exact background
